How to Prepare for Your Reiki Session
If you’ve just booked your first Reiki session, first of all: welcome. Taking the step to dedicate time and space to your energetic well-being is a beautiful act of self-care.
It is completely normal to feel a mix of curiosity, excitement, or even a little uncertainty about what to expect. The most important thing to know is that Reiki is a gentle, intelligent energy—it meets you exactly where you are. There is no "perfect" way to show up, but taking a few intentional steps before your session can help you relax, open up, and get the most out of your experience.
Here is a simple guide on how to prepare your mind, body, and space.
1. Prepare Your Body
Reiki is deeply relaxing, and your body will be in a resting state for an extended period. Making sure you are physically comfortable is key.
Dress for Comfort: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Soft pants, a cozy tee, and warm socks are ideal. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session, so choose items that allow you to lie down and breathe easily. Please avoid wearing jewelry, underwire or lined bras.
Hydrate Well: Water is an excellent conductor of energy. Drinking plenty of water both before and after your session helps support the flow of energy and assists your body’s natural clearing process.
Eat Light: Try to avoid a heavy meal right before your session so your body isn’t using all its energy on digestion. A light snack an hour or two beforehand is perfect.
Limit Stimulants: If possible, skip that extra cup of coffee or caffeine right before your session. Please ensure your system is entirely free of alcohol or recreational drugs before your session, as a clear and grounded state allows the energy to flow most effectively. Keeping your nervous system calm makes it much easier to drop into a deeply relaxed, meditative state.
2. Prepare Your Mind
You don't need to clear your mind completely to receive Reiki, but shifting your focus inward can help you transition into the healing space.
Set a Gentle Intention: Spend a few quiet moments before your session asking yourself what you need. Are you looking to release stress? Seeking emotional clarity? Or simply open to whatever comes? Hold this intention lightly in your heart.
Leave the Expectations Behind: Every Reiki session is unique. You might feel intense warmth, tingling waves, see colors, feel an emotional release, or simply feel a deep sense of peace and drift off to sleep. All of these responses are perfect. Trust that the energy goes exactly where it is needed most.
3. Prepare Your Space (For Distance Healing)
If we are connecting virtually for a distant Reiki session, creating a sacred, quiet container at home is essential for your comfort.
1.Minimize Interruptions:
10 mins before.
Find a private room where you won't be disturbed. Put your phone on "Do Not Disturb" and let family or housemates know you need an hour of quiet, uninterrupted time.
2.Create a Comfort Nest:
5 mins before.
Set up a comfortable place to lie down—your bed, a yoga mat with blankets, or a supportive recliner. Grab a pillow for your head and a blanket, as your body temperature can drop slightly when you relax deeply.
3.Set the Vibe:
3 mins before.
Dim the lights or draw the curtains. If it helps you relax, you can light a favorite candle, burn a little incense, or put on soft, ambient music without lyrics.
3.Positioning:
1 min before.
Make sure to be comfortably seated or laying down with your limbs uncrossed to allow the energy to flow freely.
A Note on the Transition: Give yourself a 10-to-15-minute buffer right after the session before rushing back to emails, chores, or driving. The integration process begins the moment the session ends, and moving slowly helps preserve that peaceful, grounded feeling.
Ultimately, the best way to prepare is simply to show up exactly as you are—with an open heart and a willingness to rest. I can't wait to hold space for you.
